There’s probably a gap – actually a huge chasm – between what you say you want and what you actually do to get what you say you want. Why? Because you’re confusing intention or effort with results.
The reality, however, is we aren’t paid for effort; we’re paid for results. Don’t buy into the collective mindset that as long as you’re trying hard you should be respected, or worse, rewarded. The real world doesn’t work that way. Look no further than Washington to see the “effort” mindset on display at every turn. Programs are failing right and left but, “we’re trying real hard.” Schools are cancelling achievement dinners because non-achievers’ feelings will be hurt; after all – they’re “trying real hard.”
Stop it!
Success and achievement are about doing, not about dreaming. Here’s a challenge for you: Pick a task or project you need to FINISH in order to improve your personal or professional well-being. Carve out time on your calendar to finish that task or project TODAY. If it can’t be completed today, at least carve out time to FINISH a piece of it TODAY.
You get the picture, right? Wishing, hoping or wanting something to happen isn’t a strategy for success. Finishing worthwhile projects is what closes the gap between succeeding and hoping to succeed – between effort and results.
