Brian Tracy says: “Goals are the fuel for the furnace of achievement.” While we agree with that statement completely, we would also add that while goal setting is important – goal achievement is critical.
Why Set Goals?
Top-level athletes, successful business-people and achievers in all fields all set goals. Goal setting provides a long-term vision and short-term motivation. It helps to organize time and resources in order to focus on tasks or projects that will enable us to create the future we desire.
By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, we can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals. We’ll see forward progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless grind. Goal setting will also raise self-confidence as we recognize our own ability to succeed and achieve.
As we see the benefits of setting (meaningful) goals it is arguably more important to understand how to achieve the goals we’ve set. Simply articulating what we want to accomplish will not guarantee success.
Taking the right ACTIONS – on a consistent basis – lead to goal achievement. It may sound a little strange but at Outperformers International we’ve found that setting a schedule vs setting a deadline is one of the keys for goal achievement. Goal achievement is based on disciplined and consistent behavior. The great Jim Rohn once said: “Failure is the result of a few errors in judgment – repeated every day, and success is the result of a few simple disciplines -practiced every day.” Linking what we say we want to accomplish – with what we actually do every day – will determine our level of success at goal achievement.
