Whether you’re a baseball fan or not, whether you’re a Mets fan or not, it might be instructive to consider what we do when we find ourselves “two games behind.”
We can’t win every game – we all know that. Some days are better than others; some projects are better than others.
So what do we do when things aren’t going the way we want them to? Here are a couple of thoughts you might find helpful.
First, instead of trying to swing for the fences, double down on the fundamentals. Focus on those few things that matter most. In baseball parlance the fundamentals are throw the ball, catch the ball, hit the ball.
What are the fundamentals for your game? Are you focused on them? Are you doing them?
Stick to the game plan – You do have a game plan, right? Plans don’t always work out the way we want them to but putting a game plan together is essential to success – personally or professionally.
Here’s a three-step plan you can use for performance improvement or business development;
See clearly what you want to accomplish – and write a specific vision statement describing what you intend to do. Don’t describe “how” you intend to do it – just describe “what” you intend to accomplish and in what time frame.
Focus intently on those few things that are going to make your vision a reality. Set specific goals for what you want to accomplish. Make each goal measurable.
Work wisely. Schedule time each day to work on those tasks or activities that are going to lead to goal accomplishment.
Lastly, have a game plan and stick to your game plan – even when you’re two games down..
